Delhi High Court rules that the Show Must Go On!

In a historic order, Hon’ble Justice Hima Kohli permitted the organisers of the ‘Sounds of Freedom Concert’ to hold the Concert that had been denied permission to be held.

Teamwork Arts challenged the Order, amongst others, on the grounds of equality, since police permission was granted to the yoga guru Ramdev’s Yoga Mahautsav, which was being held at Ram Lila Maidan on the same day.

“This is a thumping win for freedom of expression,” said Teamwork Arts Managing Director, Sanjoy Roy. “It seems poetically just that – thanks to the wisdom of the court – Sounds of Freedom can celebrate the very cause to which it is dedicated.”

The verdict of Justice Hima Kohli validates our belief in the Indian judicial system, and its unstinted support for the fundamental rights of our citizens. We hope that this judicial intervention will pave the way for other performers and organisers across the nation to be entitled to both clarity and timeliness in the process by which permissions are evaluated, and granted.
“Freedom cannot be taken for granted. We have to fight for it at every step.”
(The Board of Teamwork Arts)

SOF Digital Album – A Beginning

[box title=Download it now”]Sounds Of Freedom 2014[/box]

What started as possibly one of the few platforms for college music groups to collaborate and work together transformed into an endeavour to explore the spectrum that Sounds of freedom really means.

No boundaries, no restrictions- music that soars free.

The album is a compilation of songs from varied genres: from acoustic folk to jazz rock, from blues to post rock to completely unchartered territory as well. The compositions amplify each group’s interpretation of what freedom means to them.

The album was put together over a span of two months, with the help of students from different colleges in Delhi and NCR. What is special about the album is that a lot of colleges who don’t really participate in the mainstream Delhi University music events got a chance to explore the scene, while we got a chance to explore some priceless  talent.

Orange Sky and Hum Samaan Hain were worked out as a collaboration between different colleges- students from St Stephens, Hindu, Kirori Mal College, Ambedkar University and Satyawati College, who have never come together wrote Orange Sky. Hum Samaan Hain was composed by students from SGTB Khalsa, Hansraj College and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College together.

Azad Patang was a real find, Ujjwal from ITM Gurgaon sent us his entry on our Soundcloud page and this happens to be his first ever composition. His distinct raw voice and the folky tune grabbed our attention and we got the chance to record him for the album.

Special thanks to Chaitanya Bhalla for engineering the album, Studio Beat Route and MGMH for producing it and Ritwik De (Ghar Ka Studios) for programming, playing and mixing some of the songs.

This is our first attempt at compiling songs from across the city that encapsulate the idea of being free, and we hope to spread our wings to bring in voices from across the country singing stories of freedom and joy next year!
